Original Mill Photos

A piece of america

We are honored to share our newest addition to Ares with you! The Flanagan Mill in Cumberland County VA is a treasure trove of history, all documented, and could be as early as the 1720s sources state. The original owners/builders can be traced back to revolutionary times and even have direct connections to General George Washington. Also, it was the place where Robert E. Lee rested his head for the night, which was documented by him himself in his personal journal writings! This incredible building has seen the world around it change and has connections to multiple people who helped shape America. Come with us as we take you back in time to the 18th century!

Hand Hewn Heart Pine Beams

The materials used to create this truely amazing structure were massive old growth timbers made into the stunning hand hewn beams pictured above, possibly 300+ years old when cut down in the 1700s!

Flanagans Mill had many names throughout its existence. Waltons Mill, Flanagans Mill, and Trices Mill to name a few. The Cumberland County Courthouse first started documentation on the mill in 1765, but believe the mill was built between 1720s-1760s by George Carrington of Cumberland County. He served as a vestryman for South Parish, Presiding J.P., County Lieutenant, County Surveyor, Sheriff, Coroner, and even a member of the VA House of Burgesses from 1745-1765! As a patriot of independence, he served as Chairman & Treasurer of the Cumberland County Committee of Safety, which positions made him the highest civil and military authority in the county. George had many children in his lifetime, one of which followed his patriotism, Edward Carrington. In 776, he was commissioned a lieutenant colonel of artillery in the Revolutionary Army. Later, he served as quartermaster general on the staff of General Nathanael Greene. Edward commanded the artillery in the Battles of Hobkirk's Hill and Yorktown in 1781. He was a delegate from Virginia to the Continental Congress from 1786-1788, then served as jury foreman during Aaron Burr's trial for treason in 1807. Because of Edwards long and honorable history of public service, and because they had become such close friends and confidants, President George Washington appointed Edward Carrington as the first U.S. Marshal for Virginia in September 1789. Their letters to one another can be found at Washingtons home in Mt Vernon, VA. Edward also watched Patrick Henry's "Liberty or Death" speech through the St. John's Church windows. He was so moved by it that he said, "Let me be buried at this spot!" And so he was in 1810.

Robert E Lees Journal Entry

George Carringtons son, Nathaniel Carrington, took over the mill when George passed in 1785. Then, Nathaniels wife, Pheobe, claimed the mill following Nathaniels death in 1803. The mill was then passed on to their children, Frances Ann and Herringhem. Frances Ann and her husband, Thomas H. Walton, took over and changed its name to Waltons Milll. In 1858, the mills name changed to Flanagans Mill by owner Madison Flanagan. Later, it would be the stopping place of military man, Robert E Lee, on his journey from Appomattox to Richmond in 1865. In 1893, the mill was once again bought and the name changed to Trices Mill, which is still written on a stone across from the mill. The mill was a water grist mill and stayed in operation for many years. Some of the old equipment can still be found there!
